Gravity
What is the most powerful force in the Universe?
Something about me that you don’t know is that I love to know about Physics. I was introduced to Physics in high school. My professor was not very compelling, so I found it annoying, to the point that I started to fail in the class. At that point, my mother found a tutor that would help me. And that changed everything. He helped me to see that what I was studying, was not simply formulas or concepts; it was a door to understanding how the world has been made. He opened a new world to me (he did it with Physics and Math!), and since then, I have got only As in those subjects. Teachers are one of the most potent differentiators in the lives of children and teenagers, and I will always be grateful for that tutor. Without loving math, I would have never become an Economist. And I am thrilled I am one.
When I started my journey with Jesus, I discovered that Physics was not only a window to the Universe but also a code to understand a little bit about God’s character. How he does things. How big is his mind. Even today, I read everything I find about physics.
I guess that is the reason why, some years ago, I had a very peculiar dream. I dreamt that I was speaking with a man dressed in white, and we were somewhere outside our planet. The place semeed more similar to Mars (not that I have been there… only from the pictures we are shown)…. In my dream, I asked the man one question:
-What is the most powerful force in the Universe?
And then I tried to offer my own answer to it – “is it light?”.
In those days, I was reading a lot about light and all its extraordinary properties. I even did a Bible study about it… so I was pretty sure LIGHT was the correct answer.
But the angelic being surprised me. He answered me with only one word:
GRAVITY!
Gravity! How can gravity be the most powerful force? It is pretty impressive – but being the number one?
I woke up a little perplexed, wondering what the dream meant.
It took me a while to figure it out, and I am still discovering new applications and lessons from it.
In Colossians 1:17 it is written:
He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. (NIV)
Gravity holds us all together, attached to the earth. Because of it, we can live on earth. The sea stays in place. Plants can grow, and we can function without floating around in the Universe.
“In some ways, the story of gravity is also the story of physics, with some of the field’s biggest names finding fame by defining the force that ruled their lives. But even after more than 400 years of study, the enigmatic force still lies at the heart of some of the discipline’s greatest mysteries.”1
We know very little about gravity. Newton discovered gravity forces dwell in every mass. Einstein elaborated it resides in space and time… today we know a “strong force” keeps us up all together against all odds.
In Colossians, it is written that Jesus is the source of that force!
Or as Paul put it for the Athenians many centuries ago: “In Him we breathe and move and have our beings.” (Acts 17:28)
So was my dream only a source to encourage me to study more physics?
Actually, the more I read and understood (even if all we can really learn and comprehend is like a drop of water!), one truth was clear and more evident. That truth is the one I want to share with you today:
True power comes from within.
Through my dream, God showed me that to achieve real change and transformation, the real source is inside me, just like gravity. Change starts with Jesus working inside me.
He is my strong force, the One who keeps me grounded. Therefore, all source of lasting change comes from inside. As the Holy Spirit works inside my life, I grow in power to change things outside me. Therefore, if I want to grow, I must get closer to the Center, the source of power. I have to get closer to Jesus.
Albert Einstein was not a Christian. Yet, he summarized what I mean beautifully in a quote he shared with a student the year that he died:
“I want to know how God created this world. I’m not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know his thoughts, the rest are details.”
As I get older and closer to finalizing my time here in this beautiful world, I agree more and more with him. I also want to know more and more God himself…. The rest are details.
