Understanding Our Final Journey
What Will Be Your Epitaph?

“He passed away, to no one’s regret… (2 Chr 21:20)” This is indeed one of the saddest verses in the Bible. This verse speaks about the life of Jehoram, the eldest son of Jehoshaphat. It is heart-wrenching to consider that a person’s life could be summarized in such a desolate and disapproving manner. Jehoram’s story is a powerful reminder of how one’s actions and choices can overshadow even the most promising of beginnings.
Jehoshaphat’s Legacy and Jehoram’s Downfall
Jehoshaphat, Jehoram’s father, was a king who is remembered for his great wealth and honor (1 Chronicles 18:1). Under his reign, Judah experienced peace and prosperity because “his God had given him rest on every side” (2 Chronicles 20:30). Jehoshaphat’s legacy was one of faithfulness to God, and he implemented significant religious reforms to turn the people of Judah back to worshiping the Lord. Because of his father’s legacy, Jehoram had every opportunity to live a full, meaningful, and impactful life.
Yet, despite this promising start, Jehoram’s reign took a drastically different direction. After ascending to the throne, he quickly secured his position by killing all his brothers and some of the princes of Israel (2 Chronicles 21:4). This act of brutality marked the beginning of a reign characterized by violence, idolatry, and betrayal.
The Impact of Choices and Associations
The Bible clearly states what Jehoram’s problem was: he married “a daughter of Ahab” (2 Chronicles 21:6)—a family notorious for idolatry. Quite often, we do things thinking that, even if the choice is compromising, it will not affect us. Sometimes, we believe we are stronger than we are. Other times, we underestimate the power of evil in our lives. Jehoram’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the company we keep and the choices we make.
After Jehoram felt secure in his position as king of Judah, he killed all his brothers, his own family, which was unheard of in Judah, where life and family were valued. From there, his life went downhill. His reign lasted only 8 years. He died due to a bowel disease, as prophesied by Elijah as a judgment for his behavior (2 Chronicles 21:12-15).
A Legacy Lost
At the end, Jehoram saw all his children die, except for the youngest. His people did “no funeral fire in his honor” and he was not even buried in the tombs of the kings. After fighting so much to consolidate his position as king, he could hold onto it for only 8 years!
Reflecting on Your Legacy
There is no better time to ask yourself about your legacy than today. Will someone regret your death? Will someone cry for you and honor your departure? Reflect not just on these questions but also consider what small, positive changes you can make today. Look for modern examples of individuals who live impactful lives, serving their communities and making a difference.
If you are reading this, you still have time to change your epitaph. I would suggest starting by serving others, by giving to others. The most precious thing we have is life. And we find it when we lose it by blessing others and advancing the Kingdom of God.
